The Germinal Stage, Formation of Placenta, and Maturation of Placenta

The journey of pregnancy begins with the germinal stage. This stage begins at fertilization when the sperm fuses with the egg. This union forms a zygote: a unique new life. Over the 8 weeks, the zygote undergoes cell division and travels to the uterus, where it implants and undergoes the remaining of all 23 steps of early development. The placenta, the baby’s lifeline, is formed during this process.

Placenta

Some women wonder, “What is a placenta?” The placenta is an organ that forms in the womb around the baby. The placenta attaches to the wall of the uterus and encompasses the child. Where the placenta attaches to the uterus is important as you continue the pregnancy journey. The most common concerns about placenta attachment are: placental abruption and placenta previa. Placental abruptions occur when the placenta separates from the uterus. If a doctor sees an abruption, he or she might suggest an emergency delivery. Placenta previa occurs when the placenta attaches to the lower part of the uterus. If placenta previa continues late into the pregnancy, healthcare providers often recommend C-sections.

Although these pictures do not depict a first trimester, they illustrate the placental concerns.

The Embryonic Stage: A Period of Rapid Development

Following the germinal stage is the embryonic stage, spanning from the third to the eighth week of pregnancy. This stage is marked by significant developments – the formation of the brain and spinal cord, the heart, and limbs. By the end of the eighth week, all the baby’s organs and systems are established. It is also during this period that many women experience morning sickness due to hormonal changes.

The Fetal Stage

The fetal stage begins at nine weeks. It signifies the final stretch of pregnancy. Around this time, the baby’s sex can often be identified. This period is characterized by the continued growth of organs and systems. Distinctive features like hair and fingernails start to grow. Most of the baby’s weight and length are gained during this stage. Around the twentieth week, many mothers begin to feel their baby’s movements, a heartwarming milestone in pregnancy.
